Cable selection seems simple, but it actually involves multiple dimensions such as application scenarios, specifications, materials and certifications. Wrong selection will not only waste money, but also may bring hidden safety hazards. The following will help you sort out the ideas from five core steps.

Step 1: Clarify the Application Scenario

Different scenarios have very different requirements for cables. For fixed wiring in home decoration, BV solid cables are the first choice, which feature high mechanical strength, good oxidation resistance and stable joints, and are suitable for pre-embedding in walls or ceilings. If pipe threading and bending are required, BVR flexible cables are more flexible and more convenient for wiring. For outdoor or humid environments such as balconies, bathrooms and courtyards, RVV sheathed flexible cables should be selected. They have two layers of PVC protection, with better waterproof and insulation performance. For occasions that need to be directly buried underground or resist mechanical damage, YJV22 armored cables should be selected, and the steel tape armor layer can effectively resist external forces. For mobile electrical appliances such as electric irons and vacuum cleaners, RV flexible cables are sufficient.

Step 2: Select Specifications According to the Load

The core of specification selection is to match the power of electrical appliances. 1.5 mm² cables are sufficient for ordinary lighting circuits; 2.5 mm² cables are used for ordinary sockets (TVs, computers, small household appliances); 4 mm² cables must be used for high-power electrical appliances such as air conditioners, electric water heaters and ovens; 6 mm² cables are recommended for the main lines of kitchens and bathrooms. If multiple high-power electrical appliances share the same circuit, the specification should be increased accordingly. A simple estimation method: the safe current-carrying capacity of copper core cables per square millimeter is about 6-8 A, multiplied by the voltage (220V) to get the approximate drivable power (Watt). For example, a 2.5 mm² cable has a safe current-carrying capacity of about 15-20 A, and can drive 3300-4400 W.

Step 3: Check Materials and Insulation

Copper core is preferred for conductors, with good conductivity, less heat generation and long service life. Aluminum core has low cost but smaller current-carrying capacity under the same cross-sectional area, so it is not recommended for important occasions. In terms of insulation materials, ordinary PVC is suitable for indoor dry environments with affordable price; cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) has higher temperature resistance and better electrical performance, and is suitable for outdoor, humid or high-temperature environments. Flame retardant cables can self-extinguish when encountering fire, and low-smoke zero-halogen cables produce less smoke and low toxicity when burning, which should be prioritized in crowded places or scenarios with high environmental protection requirements.

Step 4: Verify the Authenticity of Product Quality

First check the certification: there must be a clear CCC certification mark, which can be queried through the official website of the Certification and Accreditation Administration of China. Second check the identification: the qualification certificate shall have the manufacturer name, model, specification, rated voltage, implementation standard, production date, etc., and the printing marks on the cable body shall be clear and scratch-resistant. Third check the copper core: high-quality copper core is purplish red with soft luster, while inferior copper core is dark or yellowish with many impurities. Fourth check the insulation layer: the cross-section shall have uniform thickness, the conductor shall be centered, no pores, and it has certain toughness when torn by hand. Fifth weigh the weight: products of the same specification have little difference in weight, and the one that is too light may cut corners on materials. Sixth test the flame retardancy: peel off a section of the insulation layer and ignite it, the one that can self-extinguish after leaving the open flame is high-quality.

Step 5: Avoid Pitfalls and Reserve Allowance

Do not be greedy for low prices. Products with prices significantly lower than the market average are usually shoddy goods. Do not buy "three-no" products, and choose regular building materials markets or brand exclusive stores as purchase channels. It is recommended to reserve a certain allowance during wiring, and the specification of the main line can be upgraded by one level to adapt to the increase of electrical appliances in the future. Finally, keep the shopping vouchers and qualification certificates properly to facilitate after-sales rights protection.
